Winsford Taylor, born June 16, 1962, in Letcher County, Kentucky, passed away surrounded by the love of his family. Affectionately known as “Taylor” or “Papaw” to those closest to him, he was a man whose presence left a lasting mark on everyone who knew him.
Winsford spent most of his life working as an underground miner, a career that reflected his strength, grit, and unwavering work ethic. In the second half of his life, he followed his true passion and retired to West Virginia, where he dedicated himself full-time to training horses. Among the barns and rolling hills, he found great joy and purpose.
Above all else, Winsford loved his family. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Jane Taylor, and a proud father to his daughters, Bridgete (Jason) Sowder, Sierra (Jake) Kennedy, and Leigh Johnson. His greatest pride was being a grandfather to Bentley, Brooks, Maggie, and Lucy, who brought endless light to his life. He is also survived by his brothers, Kenneth (Pam) Taylor and Wendell (Linda Kay) Taylor, along with many extended family members and countless friends. He is proceeded in death by his siblings Shirley, Gleeda, Donna Jean, Earl, Verlon and his parents William and Lake Taylor.
He loved horses, fishing, and never missed an opportunity to tell a good joke. Known for his unforgettable storytelling and quick wit, Winsford had a way of turning ordinary moments into lasting memories. If you ever met him, you probably lost a bet at some point — he loved making playful wagers and rarely let anyone forget when he won. He was always ready with a helping hand, never hesitating to show up for family, friends, or anyone in need.
Winsford will be remembered for his strength, his humor, his generosity, and the deep love he had for those around him. His stories will live on, his laughter will echo in our hearts, and his legacy will be carried forward by the family he cherished so dearly.
He will be deeply missed and forever loved.
A gathering of Family and Friends will be held on Saturday from 11:00 till 1:00 at Allen Funeral Home.
